Brief:

96% of Irish 11-12 year olds own mobile phones. These phones are becoming more advanced rapidly, serving as a phone, text service, camera, mp3 player, games console and alarm clock.

Design and make a novelty phone holder to place beside one's bed to facilitate the phones use as an alarm clock. The artefact should be designed to suit the majority of phones as people regularly change model, and its design should reflect a part of your life/ personality.

Research and investigation:

This section explores some of the main elements of the design process involved in solving a brief, and producing an artefact. The chart across outlines the design process sequence followed (some additional elements are required).

Sample solution:

Project outline:

Based on a lady's shoe, this novelty phone holder is comprised of three main parts. (1) The sole, this is a piece of timber which is shaped using a coping saw to resemble the sole of a shoe and is attached to the heel using panel pins or a screw joint. (2) The heel is cut from a rectangular block and is shaped using a coping saw, hand plane and a rasp. (3) The toe cap of the shoe has a trench removed to allow the phone to sit into it and is shaped to mirror the curvature of a lady's shoe using a variety of carving chisels, coping saw and a rasp. this is pinned to the sole from in underneath.

Duration:

This project should take approximately 5 double lessons depending on the ability level of the group, situation and the resources available.
