Foreword:

 

On this page you will find two sample briefs, and example solutions to each. It is intended that pupils will engage in designing and making a project based on one of these briefs in the first number of weeks in their third year.

These sample solutions to the given briefs are strictly examples and should not be manufactured by the entire class. It is intended that after the completion of this project the pupils will have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to fully engage in the process of designing and making a project as part of their junior certificate assessment.

Note: the following aims and objectives are intended to be contributory to those outlined for first and second year.

Aims and objectives (adapted from the syllabus):

 

Aim:

To encourage the acquisition of a body of knowledge appropriate to wood craft and technology through analysis, synthesis and realisation.

Objectives: 

On completion of this course of projects the pupils should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of interpreting design briefs the entire process of designing.
  • Propose solutions to design problems, appraise proposed or executed solutions and demonstrate the ability to modify these.
  • Demonstrate appropriate craft skills to shape and form wood (and add suitable embellishments) in the execution of projects, with cognisance of appropriate and safe use of hand and power tools.
