Brief:
People often have a collection of items which are of value to them, their own 'treasure'. Often these items are kept in containers such as shoe boxes and biscuit tins which do not reflect the importance of the items to the person. Design and make a container suitable to hold such items of importance. The container should have a closed top, be decorative and include some form of embellishment/ornamentation (see mtw syllabus). | ![]() |

Research and investigation:
This section explores some of the main elements of the design process involved in solving a brief, and producing an artefact. The chart across outlines the design process sequence followed (some additional elements are required). You can view the design process for this project by clicking on either the powerpoint or PDF version below.

Sample solution:
Project outline: This project is a decorative box with a veneered top. The sides are to be jointed using finger joints. The lid and base are chamfered on four sides using the hand plane. The base will be screw fixed to the sides. The lid will stay on with a screwed on veneered plywood insert. The veneer is in the design of a chessboard, and the box is square to incorporate this. Many other forms of embellishments can be used to enhance the appearance of this box in place of veneering. Duration: This project should take approximately 10 double lessons depending on the ability level of the group, situation and the resources available.

Pupil's individual design input:
Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is good scope for individual design input in relation to the artefact. The box itself could be designed to be a different size. The embellishment aspect of the project allows the pupils free range to design as they wish, with different types of veneers and wood burning (see below) or by the use of inlaying, etc. The jointing of the box is also to be designed by the pupils and should be justified (see the practice joints section of this website.)
