2nd year projects:

Plane project

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Brief:

Many toys are designed around real life machines. Model aircrafts are one such toy and have been very popular ever since the very first aircraft flew.

Design and make a child's toy designed around a plane. The toy should represent the main features of a plane to good effect and be visually stimulating for the child playing with it. The proportionality of the toy should suit its intended user.

Research and investigation:

This section explores some of the main elements of the design process involved in solving a brief, and producing an artefact. The chart across outlines the design process sequence followed (some additional elements are required).

You can view the design process for this project by clicking on either the powerpoint or PDF version below.

 Sample solution:

Project outline:

This project is designed to resemble a plane. It has been created by a rectangular body shaped to suit using a hand plane and coping saw. The wings are made from one piece housed into the main body and tapered for effect. The tail fin is mortised into the main body. This mortise can be be quite tricky to complete accurately and a mortise and tenon practice joint may be desirable prior to completing this project.

Duration:

This project should take approximately 5 double lessons depending on the ability level of the group, situation and the resources available.

Pupil's individual design input:

Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is scope for a lot of individual design input in relation to the artefact. Below are four different adaptations of the project created by secondary school pupils. Each has had their own individual input into the wing design, tail fin, paintwork, and more. Some of the designs are based on different types of planes, such as the second from the left designed with skis for landing in water.
