Hard and soft boiled eggs are a common element of the typical Irish family's diet. Design and make an egg holder, to be placed on the kitchen table to hold at least two eggs. The holder should be attractive in appearance and have a design theme which reflects its use. |  |

Sample solution:
Project outline: This sample solution of the brief has one cross member, with holes drilled in it to hold the eggs, which is mortised into the two side members. The side members have been cut into the shape of eggs in egg cups as part of having a theme linked with the artefact's use. There is wide range of processes involved in the project and it aims to reinforce the skills learned in the previous projects and develop the new skill of mortising. Duration: This project should take approximately 4 double lessons depending on the ability level of the group, situation and the resources available.

Pupil's individual design input:
Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is scope for individual design input in relation to some aspects of the artefact. The length of the cross member could be designed to suit the number of eggs the artefact holds. The colour scheme of the project can be designed by each individual pupil as can profile of the side members (see image below: the side member is cut to resemble a egg which has been cracked open).
