Brief:
Each Irish county has its own rich history and traditions. The popularity of inter county sports highlights the great pride many people have for their home counties. Design and make a clock based around the theme of your home county. The clock should be bright and colourful, and the colour scheme should fit the county which has been chosen as the theme for the clock. (You may also choose to apply this brief to Ireland as a whole, or your home country). | ![]() |

Research and Investigation:
This section explores some of the main elements of the design process involved in solving a brief, and producing an artefact. The chart across outlines the design process sequence followed (some additional elements are required). You can view the design process for this project by clicking on either the powerpoint or PDF version below.

Sample solution:
Project outline The county colours clock is an interesting variation on common clock projects taught in the MTW classroom. Using a clock kit (shown across), and a piece of thin plywood the pupils will make a clock in the shape of their own county. This outline will then be painted in the colours of the county. This project is designed to give the students experience in the use of the coping saw. Each county's border is different, but they all contain many twists and turns to be followed with the coping saw give the students good scope to practice. The advantage of using the county outline is however that accuracy is not essential, as the outline will not have distinct curves or contours which must be (rigidly) followed. Duration: This project should take approximately 3 double lessons depending on the ability level of the group, situation and the resources available.

Pupil's individual design input:
Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is scope for individual design input in relation to aesthetics of the artefact. The face of the clock may be painted in the county colours but also the town names and locations could be added to enhance the design. Perhaps a image or number of images to represent the county could be painted onto the clock face (such as Patrick Kavanagh for Co. Monaghan, or the Galway hooker shown below). Numbers could be added also to the clock face to augment its design.
