Brief:
Many students own a collection of CDs and/or DVDs. Design and make a storage unit to hold at least ten CDs and/or DVDS. The unit should be lightweight, stylish and designed so that CDs and/or DVDs will be easily accessible. | ![]() |

Research and Investigation:
This section explores some of the main elements of the design process involved in solving a brief, and producing an artefact. The chart across outlines the design process sequence followed (some additional elements are required). You can view the design process for this project by clicking on either the powerpoint or PDF version below.

Sample solution:
Project outline This project is based around two cross halving joints which are joined by three dowel rods to create a decorative storage unit for CDs or DVDs. The number of CDs or DVDs which this unit can hold can be designed to suit by simply reducing or increasing the length of the dowel rods. Duration: This project will take approximately 6 double lessons depending on the ability of the group and the resources available

Pupil's individual design input:
Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is scope for individual design input in relation to some aspects of the artefact. The length of the holder and how many dvds it can hold is easily adjusted by cutting the connecting dowels to size. The curves on the ends of the cross halving joints are only example and any design can be implemented here. Planing chamfers on the halving joints could enhance the appearance. Other forms of design could be applied to the project such as wood burning, painting, v-carving, etc.
