With the affordability of air travel, improved roads and a massive volume of cars in Ireland today travel by waterways is fast becoming a thing of the past. However this has not reduced the popularity of recreational boating in Ireland. Design and make a model boat. The boat should be buoyant and capable to travelling a small distance in water self propelled. The boat should be decorated and finished accordingly. |  |

Sample solution:
Project outline: This project is based on a very simple concept. A rectangular piece of wood with a section removed at the back. The propeller is a cross halving joint. There are two cuts on each side at the rear of the boat and an elastic band is wrapped around here, with the propeller in the middle. Wind the propeller up, place the boat in the water and watch it go. The front has been shaped to resemble a boat using the coping saw, hand plane and rasp. Duration: This project will take approximately 4 double lessons depending on the ability of the group and the resources available.

Pupil's individual design input:
Within the framework of the sample solution shown above there is scope for individual design input in relation to some aspects of the artefact. The main area where pupil's individual design input can be applied is the painting of the boat, however the boat itself may be augmented with additional members such as the rectangular block and dowels shown below to change it from a speed boat to a ocean liner.
